The facts of PhD life (Part 2 - History)

WOMEN: The unsung heroes of science.

"Forgotten" female collaborators - A short list
Mileva Einstein - Theory of Relativity
Lise Mitner - Nuclear Fission
Rosalind Franklin - Structure of DNA

James Watson on Rosalind Franklin in his book "The Double Helix"
"By choice she did not emphasize her feminine qualities. ... There was never lipstick to contrast with her straight black hair, while at the age of thirty-one her dresses showed all the imagination of English blue-stocking adolescents. So it was quite easy to imagine her the product of an unsatisfied mother who unduly stressed the desirability of professional careers that could save bright girls from marriages to dull men. ... Clearly Rosy had to go or be put in her place. The former was obviously preferable because, given her belligerent moods, it would be very difficult for Maurice [Wilkins] to maintain a dominant position that would allow him to think unhindered about DNA. ... The thought could not be avoided that the best home for a feminist was in another person's lab."

Something a little different to make at home.

1) Someday I'm going to make fresh flower leis and remember my Hawaiian trip.

2) Nom nom nom - recipe here

3) Exfoliating body scrub

Scrub stuff that a friend of mine told me about. I've used it and it's pretty awesome. It doesn't last forever b/c of the honey, but it can be a good group project and it smells great. They were bachelorette party favors for us.

Recipe:
Sugar Scrub - fantastic exfoliating scrub that is great for softening
up feet or elbows or for a smoother shave
1 c Honey
2 c Sugar
2 tbs tea
5 drops vanilla

4) Sundaes made of washcloths - how to here

A friend of mine had one and I thought they were really cute. They also have the how-tos for cupcakes and lollipops

5) In my quest for photos, I found this and thought it was cute

I am not a dork...oh wait...

As my friend Steph commented...wording is important

A mistake my dad made when he asked my mom (a reading/English teacher) "Would you marry me?" Her response: something like "What do you mean, hypothetically?" I think it was more convoluted and more confusion involved, but yes.
