Oof
I hate making decisions. Fun vs feelings of responsibility...darn it.
In other thoughts - I'm getting that wonderous question of "What do you want for your birthday?" My thoughts? A new kitchen, a new car, a big flatscreen TV (nothing huge, I'd settle for 40")...Alternatively? Apparently my entire Amazon.com list is made of movies and soundtracks. I do LOVE soundtracks...but I'm impressed at how uninspired I am.
Speaking of uninspired, I need to write an abstract for a poster I don't want to present. Wee.

So my parents brought me all the CDs I left at home...
And now I'm remembering why.
Some of it I just can't help but listen to every once in a blue moon. Some of it I'd never openly admit I owned. And a lot of it just brings back strange memories...
I'd say I'd never openly admit I owned some Nickelback, but you're about to find out anyhow...NPR did a piece on the creator of "This is How You Remind Me of Someday" It's a mashup of Nickelback's two songs "How You Remind Me" and "Someday." If you didn't already hate them, welcome to the club. They have the formula for catchy and much to my dismay, I know all the words. This is just a little trippy. I first heard this in high school or maybe early college. I just remember dialing up on my parents computer and finding this. Read more about it on the NPR link or click the song title to hear the mashup - it's trippy.

Lab - my other home
As I was always warned (and let's face it, I was already aware), my lab has become Home 2. Probably an equal to my actual house. The last 2 weeks have been riddled with 11-14 hour days. Bleh. So much so that when my friends came to visit they had to spend an hour with me in lab this weekend. And the weekend before that my parents sat in the car while I took care of some non-visitor friendly lab work. Maybe I should focus more and stop blogging at work. I'd probably get more done that way...
In an update on my previous post: I can't stop eating the animal crackers in my desk. Crap.
I guess my boyfriend is on the right track (I never like to admit these things) but making me run 2 miles in 90 degree weather couldn't hurt in response to my goofy eating habits. I hate running but it looks like it's on the docket again tonight. My theory on running since my Jr year of college: I don't run unless something is chasing me and I started doing Tae Kwon Do so things wouldn't chase me...Somehow I got confused and my TKD group last year convinced me to run in a relay marathon. It was pretty sweet actually. There were people cheering us the whole way. You couldn't go more than 10 feet without someone yelling 'Great Job,' 'You're almost there,' 'Keep it up,' etc. Sadly, I didn't have my own cheering section during training.

That's probably not good...
1) Lab safety came by a few weeks ago so we baby-proofed the lab for the year. I removed all the food from my desk. I was doing pretty good at keeping everything in my locker but the food is encroaching once again. Not only a safety violation but WAY to tempting to eat it at all times. And I never thought I'd be guilty of this violation at all...
2) Pubmed is no longer one of my "top sites" according to Google Chrome. It's been replaced by the likes of Netflix, Facebook, My blog and my Google Reader. (If you don't know what Pubmed is, it's the place where we can look up all our research articles for doing, ya know, research)
3) There was some debris or growth on the bottom of my travel mug today. I'm pretty good about cleaning it but last week I must have failed. I had to use the breakroom scrubby to clean it. Just imagine a scrubby that's probably been here longer than I have...or maybe longer than I've had a scientific career period.
4) Our lab has a new lab pet. The slime mold that contaminated our bacterial culture media. Which, btw, was in a aluminum foil covered Erlenmeyer flask.
5) Food in my desk - I've officially eaten 3 pieces of Mamba candy during the typing of this post.
6) I'm still obsessively buying yarn on eBay. (However, I did get 2 commissions for hats from coworkers yesterday.)
And finally...Mmmm Bacon

I just realized that I had failed to subscribe to failblog in my RSS reader until today. Of all the crap I have on there, how did I forget this one?

I don't even care if the story is true. The pictures make me giddy.
I always thought he was the man, but something about this makes me even more excited. Original LiveJournal post this is stolen from

I'm feeling like I want to buy some art...
For some reason this caught my eye and I really like it. My turquoise ceiling would go pretty well with these vibrant colors...I think it reminds me of those photos of galaxies.
And I've always wanted a painting series

"Forgotten" female collaborators - A short list
Mileva Einstein - Theory of Relativity
Lise Mitner - Nuclear Fission
Rosalind Franklin - Structure of DNA
James Watson on Rosalind Franklin in his book "The Double Helix"
"By choice she did not emphasize her feminine qualities. ... There was never lipstick to contrast with her straight black hair, while at the age of thirty-one her dresses showed all the imagination of English blue-stocking adolescents. So it was quite easy to imagine her the product of an unsatisfied mother who unduly stressed the desirability of professional careers that could save bright girls from marriages to dull men. ... Clearly Rosy had to go or be put in her place. The former was obviously preferable because, given her belligerent moods, it would be very difficult for Maurice [Wilkins] to maintain a dominant position that would allow him to think unhindered about DNA. ... The thought could not be avoided that the best home for a feminist was in another person's lab."

Something a little different to make at home.
1) Someday I'm going to make fresh flower leis and remember my Hawaiian trip.
2) Nom nom nom - recipe here
3) Exfoliating body scrub
Scrub stuff that a friend of mine told me about. I've used it and it's pretty awesome. It doesn't last forever b/c of the honey, but it can be a good group project and it smells great. They were bachelorette party favors for us.
Recipe:
Sugar Scrub - fantastic exfoliating scrub that is great for softening
up feet or elbows or for a smoother shave
1 c Honey
2 c Sugar
2 tbs tea
5 drops vanilla
4) Sundaes made of washcloths - how to here
A friend of mine had one and I thought they were really cute. They also have the how-tos for cupcakes and lollipops
5) In my quest for photos, I found this and thought it was cute
